Blogger Talk: Indie/Small-Press Month - Interview with M.R. Merrick

We are still celebrating Indie/Small- Press month and today we have a special guest on - M.R. Merrick. If you know of him, you probably know he is a little crazy and a whole lotta hilarious (which you will know for sure after reading below :) We are very pleased to have him on today.

 1. What has your writing process been like? Did you try to go the traditional route at first? What have been the most surprising things you've learned about publishing a novel?

My process has been all over the map. I’ve only written three books, and only two are published (the third isn’t due out until December 2012) so I’m trying a lot of different things with each book to find a groove that works best for me.

Right now I like to write either a detailed outline, which gets the story solidified in my head, or a list of goals and accomplishments to be made clear in each book. This way, at a glance, I can see where I need to go.

I have tried writing without an outline and the ‘just seeing what happens’ approach, and while it’s fun and doable; it makes the revisions process a lot heavier. At least that was my experience with it. I prefer to streamline things whenever possible.

I didn’t put much effort into going traditional. I did spend two years while writing my first novel researching the industry and I did start querying, but after about a dozen querys I found Amazon’s KDP program, which was a savior.

I don’t have the patience to approach traditional publishing the way they want me to. Waiting 8 weeks in some cases, just to get a form rejection didn’t work for me. So I approached publishing independently, but the same lack of patience I had with querying disappeared. I knew I needed to put out a product that could rival the traditional industry, so I hired a professional designer for my covers, as well as multiple professional editors.

Now that’s not to say I wouldn’t traditional publish, but they would have to approach me, I think. After all I’ve learned and the experience I’ve gained independently, I think I would be in a great position to traditionally publish, because I would put the same amount of work in I do now, only I’d also have others working on my behalf as well. That being said, I’m not convinced that I’d go that route even if I were approached, but it’s something I would seriously consider.

What’s surprised me the most is how we all find success and failures independently. What worked for me might not work for the next author, and vice versa. Each book has to travel its own path, and each book finds its audience in different ways. It’s not a matter of publishing and everyone promoting in the same manner. There is no one path or secret to success, it all varies depending on genre, the style in which it’s written, who the author is, etc.

2. Can you give us a teaser from The Protector series?

From a chapter in Exiled, Book 1:

“My, can it be true? One day you’re putting knives to my throat and calling me a filthy demon, and the next you’re having sleepovers with an Underworlder?” - Rayna

And here’s the first few paragraphs of SHIFT,  Book 2:

My eyes tore open to the sound of screaming. The drywall rattled and Rayna’s voice raged through the wall. My pulse jumped as panic set in and I leapt from my bed moving straight for the door.
I ran through the archway, pants tangling on my legs as I tried to pull them up. Marcus, Willy, and Tiki were halfway down the hall, their faces owned by fear.

Marcus reached the door before me, turned the silver handle, and pushed through. The door creaked and the smell of blood, sweat, and something else seeped from the darkness. Marcus flicked on the light and I saw what I already feared.

I’ll save the spoilers from book 3, RELEASE, another day.

3. Have Chase describe Rayna, and have Rayna describe Chase.

“Rayna is…how do I say this…she’s not going to read this is she?”
“Okay good, cause you know how she can get. Rayna’s a firecracker. She’s confident, she hits like a brick wall, and she doesn’t take crap from anyone - including me. She doesn’t take no for an answer; I think she might always get what she wants in the end - which isn’t always a good thing. But on the flip side, she’s loyal to a fault, and I know if a demon rushes my back, she’ll get it before it gets me. Rayna’s a soldier, but also, she’s a girl, even if she doesn’t show that side of herself very often. One thing I do know is I’ll let her watch my back over anyone else.”

“What’s Chase like? In three words; he’s an ass.”

“ More? Okay, he’s an arrogant, hot-headed ass, who needs to be kept in line. That’s where I come in.”

“Look, in all honesty, Chase is difficult in so many ways. He stands up for what he believes in, even it means he’s going to get hurt. He’s emotional, although he would deny that to the end, but everyone around him sees it. And he acts first and deals with the repercussion afterwards -which almost always gets us in trouble. What else can I say? He’s a seventeen-year-old boy. But, he’s also my friend and sometimes, when he’s not being a jerk, he’s not horrible to have around. Except for when me smiles and squint’s his eyes. He knows you want to give him whatever he wants and I hate that. That’s when I want to hit him the hardest.”

4. If you were sitting down to eat with Chase and Rayna, what would you eat and what would you all talk about?

Well, seeing as Chase’s diet is mostly made up of Pizza Pops and chocolate bars, and Rayna likes Pasta and cooking, maybe home-made pizza?

As for a conversation piece, is there a guard at the door? You know, one who could confiscate weapons and such? Because I don’t think I’d agree to dinner without that…and maybe a fire-proof jacket or something…

I think Chase would probably curse me out for everything I’ve done to him and Rayna wouldn’t be far behind. If we could all get past that initial awkward moment where they’d be looking at me like “I know who you are and everything you’ve done, and I’ll get you for it,” then I think we’d have a nice little chat - probably about what a jerk Vincent is. The night would come to an end with another awkward moment of Chase telling me I’d better be nice in the last book or he’ll be back.

5. What part did you play in the process of developing your covers? What did you hope to achieve with them?

Short of physically doing the work, I did the rest. I found the cover artist I wanted through a referral from a friend. I gave her two designs to work with, stating what I was looking for from each one, and she made them. I had a really hard time deciding between the two, because they were both so different, but something about the tree, with the fire and water on both sides, just spoke to me. There was a type of power in that image that represented the story, and she brought it to life in an incredible manner.

The rest of the covers were the same. I described the design and what I wanted to see, and she’s made it happen better than even I imagined. It’s a nice setup.

6. if you were to wake up tomorrow & Demons (or Half Demons) have taken over the world what would be the first thing you'd do, and what would you do to assure the survival for you and you loved ones?

Put on my most durable pair of cargos, find the biggest blade I could, and either be really brave and enter the new world, or make sure all the doors and windows were locked. There is a slight chance I’d try to friendly with them and see if they could turn me into some all powerful creature…maybe…

Exiled
The Protector, book #1

Chase Williams is a demon hunter in the Circle, or at least he was supposed to be. On his fifteenth birthday, Chase stepped up to the altar to claim his elemental power, but it never came. Elemental magic is passed down to a hunter through the bloodline, but on Chase's birthday, the bloodline stopped.

Exiled without the Circle's protection, Chase has spent two years trying to survive a world riddled with half-demons and magic. When he has a run in with a frightened and seemingly innocent demon, he learns the Circle's agenda has changed: the Circle plans to unlock a portal and unleash pure-blood demons into the world. Vowing to stop them, and knowing he can't do it alone, Chase forms a reluctant alliance with Rayna — a sexy witch with an attitude and a secret.

In their attempt to stop them, Chase and Rayna find themselves in the middle of the Circle's plan, leaving one of them to decide what their friendship is worth, and the other's life depending on it.

 Shift
The Protector, book #2

Devastated by a terrible loss, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else—a monster threatening to tear her apart.

As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.

Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway - SEND by Patty Blount

I am so happy to be part of the SEND blog tour. Bullying has been a topic I've focused a lot of attention on and Patty Blount, the author of SEND, is here today to tell us the consequences of technology.
The Consequences of Technology

In 2004, my son had a growth spurt. He hit five foot nine, started shaving, endured some vicious acne and all the other curses of puberty and so, became the favorite target of a group of little boys who thought it was great fun to tear down the giant. This torment had gone on for months before I ever learned about it.

I didn’t learn about it until my son told me he no longer wanted to live.

He was in sixth grade. Today, he’s in college and doing well, but I will tell you he bears deep scars from his ordeal.

Let’s skip to 2009: a new executive at my day job directed us to start incorporating social media into our work. I knew nothing about networks like Facebook and Twitter and had a lot of homework to do before I could figure out how to meet his directive. The more work I did, the more grateful I became that none of these networks were around back in 2004.

If they had been, I’m sure I would have lost my son.

Social networks are great tools. They give a voice to anyone with an internet connection, they allow us to remain connected to folks we’d otherwise have lost touch with, and they expose us to news before the networks can report it. Here’s the irony:  the things that make social networks so great are also the very things that make them so dangerous. The problem with everyone having a voice is that we can’t readily determine which voices are qualified to support the opinions being stated and which are just hot air. Remaining connected can easily become stalking. And, ‘news’ may be nothing more than rumor. (Bon Jovi did not die in December of 2011.)

I have two more bullet points for the Danger list: First, many of us are more likely to say something snarky online than directly to someone’s face. Psychologist John Suler calls this the Online Disinhibition Effect and what’s really scary is most of us aren’t even aware we’re caught up in it. According to Suler, the internet makes us all anonymous and invisible and because there’s no online authority, exaggerates our own sense of self.

In other words – it’s a power trip and power is pretty much the bully’s objective, isn’t it?
Second, there is the immediacy of it and I want to stress that this is NOT a trap limited only to teens. Adults are just as likely to lose their tempers and take inappropriate action based on anger as teens. This is actually why I chose SEND as the title of my book – because the Send key is RIGHT THERE at the top of the screen, just itching to be clicked before you’ve carefully crafted the message you want to express.

I think it’s important for all of us to remember two things: first, technology is not a toy and second, children are not short adults, which means that is exactly how they’ll treat technology. Social sites, smart phones and the internet have the potential for positive and negative results. I don’t know how children can distinguish the good from the bad without guidance from adults.

How old were your children when you bought them a cell phone? Are they on Facebook or Twitter? Do you know who they’re talking to? Better question – do you know who’s talking to them?

Blogger Talk: Indie/Small-Press Month - Character interview from ENEMY WITHIN by Angeline Kace

It's day two in our celebrating Indie/Small Press author, Angeline Kace. Her upcoming release - ENEMY WITHIN - will be releasing soon!

Today we have invited Brooke and Mirko to stop by and chat.

Character Interview:

This question is for Brooke. Other than the obvious changes in your life, what are some changes you’re going through that we might not know about?

My sense of belonging has really been shaken. I’m now a part of two worlds, but don’t really belong or fit into either one of them. I feel like I’m in limbo, balancing on the cusp of both worlds. I wish I could just stay in one, but at the same time a part of me is excited to see what I can do in the other. It’s also terrifying because the same part of me that’s excited could also get me killed.

Mirko, how have you changed since Brooke entered your life?

*Looks at Brooke and grins*

Brooke’s situation is chaotic, but I’ve never felt as grounded before as I do since meeting her. And I think that’s allowed me to be more patient, more understanding and compassionate. She makes me a better person.

Brooke and Mirko, here’s a question for both of you.

What’s the best thing that happened to each of you yesterday?

Mirko chuckles. “When Brooke didn’t have the blender’s lid attached right and her strawberry-banana smoothie sprayed all over her.
“What?! I can’t believe that was your best thing.” Brooke says incredulously and then looks back at Jessica. “That was probably the worst part of my day.”
“No,” adds Mirko and drops his voice, “I’m talking about the part when I licked it off your chin, then trailed my tongue down your neck to catch the rest.” His lip lifts in the corner as if he’s watching it play all over again in his mind.
“Oh.” Brooke giggles. “Yeah, that part was probably my favorite, too.”

Mirko, can you give us your sexiest pick up line?

I don’t have pick up lines. I’m confident enough that they’re not necessary. Pick up lines indicate that I’d have to plan something generic in advance to say to attract a woman. And it’s not so much the words I say, but my swagger while saying them. It’s the energy transferred, the heat you put off while introducing yourself that matters the most.

Brooke and Mirko, can you share with us a fun fact about each other?

Mirko is the thumb war champion. He’s a machine. It’s almost like he’s double jointed or something and can move his thumb in ways and at angles that none of us can beat. It’s crazy.

Brooke’s not afraid of spiders. She doesn’t cringe when she sees one, nor does she hesitate when killing one. Most girls have this irrational fear of them, almost as if they’re afraid because every other girl’s afraid. I actually think it’s cute that Brooke’s not one of those girls.

Brooke, when you look at Mirko, who do you see?

I see a guy who used to annoy me and drive me crazy. He was too forward, sometimes too crass, and right all the time. Drove me insane. But now…I see a man who’s more genuine than anyone I’ve ever known. I see a leader who always fights for what’s right, and a friend who’s always willing to listen. I aspire to me more like him. When I look at Mirko… I see my hero.

And Mirko, when you look at Brooke, who do you see?

She’s the embodiment of everything I could ask for and more.

Tour: DON'T TURN AROUND by Michelle Gagnon

I'm really happy to be part of the blog tour for Don't Turn Around. You can get some good information on the book below!

Can you explain the "world" Noa and Peter are living in?
In what ways does the novella No Escape tie into the story we see in Don't Turn Around

Basically, Noa and Peter live in our world, the only real difference is that there’s an illness called PEMA that only afflicts teens. It’s a wasting disease with a 100% mortality rate, and it’s quickly becoming an epidemic.

The novella explains what happens to a character who is mentioned in passing in DTA, a kid named Alex Herbruck who Noa grew up with in a foster care facility. She escapes from her captors after being kidnapped; poor Alex isn’t as fortunate.

Don't Turn Around by Michelle Gagnon
Publisher: HarperCollins (August 28th, 2012)
Reading Level: Young Adult
Hardback: 310 pages
Sixteen-year-old Noa has been a victim of the system ever since her parents died. Now living off the grid and trusting no one, she uses her computer-hacking skills to stay safely anonymous and alone. But when she wakes up on a table in an empty warehouse with an IV in her arm and no memory of how she got there, Noa starts to wish she had someone on her side.

Enter Peter Gregory. A rich kid and the leader of a hacker alliance, Peter needs people with Noa’s talents on his team. Especially after a shady corporation threatens his life. But what Noa and Peter don’t realize is that Noa holds the key to a terrible secret, and there are those who’d stop at nothing to silence her for good.

Filled with action, suspense, and romance, this first book in a new trilogy offers readers nonstop thrills.

Interview:

I know I’ve been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the second book in the Vampire Born series – Enemy Within. To help hold me over… just a tiny bit, can you give us a nice juicy teaser?

I licked my lips and savored the sweet, tart liquid. It zapped my tongue like the charge you’d get if you touched it to a battery full of juice. It excited me as the jolt jumped through my cells, shooting from one to the next, spurring little electrical shockwaves as it flowed down the back of my throat, then electrified my chest, and crackled into my gut.
I opened my eyes and found Mirko lying beneath me and covered in . . . blood.

Can you tell us what was harder and easier for you throughout writing the first and the second book in the series?

Enemy Within has been so much more difficult for me to write than Descended by Blood was. There’s a lot of reasons that go into this, but it’s been really hard for me to shut out the voices in my head of what people expect of the next book, what they liked or didn’t like in Descended by Blood, etc.

And I really wanted to write Enemy Within from both Brooke and Mirko’s point of views, but traditionally, once you start telling a story from a character’s point of view, you’d stick with that, and the story started being told from only Brooke’s point of view. Mirko’s voice was strong enough and demanding enough in my head that I finally gave in to him, and I am SO glad I did. I think the readers will be happy I did, too.

Which character do you find yourself thinking about the most?

Well, Mirko speaks the loudest, but I’m not sure that counts as the most. Lol I do think about him a lot, though. And Brooke and what she is going through and how she should respond to certain things. I think about Jaren a lot, too. True to his Scorpio nature, he doesn’t say much, but he has a LOT of stuff going on underneath the surface, and sometimes it’s somewhat challenging for even me to get deep down and find out what’s going on with him and convey that on the page.

If you could tell people anything about being an Indie author, what would it be?

Oh, gosh. That’s a tough one. There’s a lot I’d tell people about being an author, but it generally applies to all authors. I guess indie-specific would be that it’s a lot harder than it looks. You’re the one responsible for everything, and although that is rewarding most of the time, it can also be overwhelming and challenging.

I think the area most indie authors struggle with is editing. They can’t do it themselves, and then they have a hard time finding someone who can do it—properly. Amazon opening up the flood gates to allow anybody to upload a book wasn’t only a pseudo-gold rush for authors. It also was for cover designers, formatters, and editors. And what I see a lot of is that indies are hiring editors and they think the editing side is taken care of.  But in reality, just because you pay someone to go over your manuscript doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing, nor does it make them qualified.

Finding a proper editor is like finding an elusive ghost in the clouds. Authors hire out because they can’t do it themselves. They don’t know what’s wrong or how to fix it. They’re not technically trained like a proper editor is. So when they go looking for an editor, they have the same challenge. They don’t know what makes a good editor. It’s not like looking at a cover and being able to tell if it’s pretty or not. It’s technical in a different way.

What’s been one of the most important things for you in telling your characters story?

To keep things real. Although the book is written around a mythical species, I want there to be enough honesty and truth in the way that the characters deal with things that it remains believable.

12 Rounds by Lauren Hammond
Publisher: S.B. Addison Books (July 31st, 2012)
Paperback: 190 pages
Reading Level: New Adult
Sean (Right-Hook) Reilly knows a few things about himself. One, he's the middle-weight boxing champion of the world with an undefeated record. Two, women find his cocky persona, chiseled biceps, and inked body sexy. Also, the fact that it's known that he doesn't do relationships only adds to his sex appeal. And three, he's Irish, proud of it, and a member of the Braithreachas Don Saol, a branch of the Irish mafia and king pins of the drug cartel taking over the streets of Cleveland.

Connor Doyle(aka Connie) the boss and leader of the Braithreachas Don Saol, has been like a father to Sean, taking him under his wing and teaching him how to survive on the streets after the death of his parents. Sean has never been ungrateful, but has always wanted one thing...

More. More to live for. More to fight for. More to believe in. A chance at a future without drugs or guns. A chance at a future without wondering which day will be his last.

There's only one problem with that. You live by the braithreachas. You die by the braithreachas. And Sean knows whether Connie considers him to be family or not, the only way he'll be leaving the braithreachas is in a body bag.

Hadlee Flax has had a year to overcome her issues. After almost being raped and brutalized, she's putting her best foot forward, seeing a therapist, and has even(with some persuasion from her best friend, Lara) enrolled in self defense classes. And she's doing well moving on with her life until she meets the dark, and conflicted Irish boxing champion of the world, Sean Reilly.

Hadlee is immediately drawn to the gorgeous, cold, and mysterious man who speaks with a slight Irish brogue. She soon learns that there is much more to him than his darkened gaze, cool demeanor, and body covered in tattoos. He's not the type of man she thought he was. And Hadlee finds herself doing something she never thought she would do in the last year...

Falling for a guy.

Falling for Sean Reilly. A man who is on the path to becoming a boxing legend.

One thing Hadlee doesn't know is the other part of Seans' life. His life of drug running, and killing. Or the fact that when he's not boxing he's walking the streets with a gat tucked into the back of his loose jeans, and glancing over his shoulder at every turn.

But it doesn't take Hadlee long to learn that some attractions and relationships can be fatal.

And sometimes...

They just might be worth fighting for.

Reading Level: Young Adult

Rating: 4 of 5 stars
A kingdom on the brink of war.
A king on the fringes of insanity.
A family running for their lives.

Ash and Fin’s only desire is to be together and dive into their happily ever after, though their conflicting worlds work to pull them apart. Neither is ready to convert to the other’s life: become a human or a mer. Little do they know that somewhere in Natatoria a secret holds the fine fabric of everyone’s lives together. If the truth is discovered, Ash and Fin will no longer have the luxury of waiting. They’ll be forced to choose. But will it be for loyalty or love? Or will someone else make the choice for them if they can’t decide?

Enter the watery world of treachery, greed, and the binding mer kiss as the story continues with Evergreen, book two of Mer Tales.

Review:

I think I mentioned this during my review of book 1 but the world in this book is just so beautiful and mystifying. The way Brenda brings the scenes to life is truly amazing. This book brings an even more intense journey for Ash and Fin. Although their story seemed to just begin, they have huge decisions to make in order to be happy.

Ash could be frustrating at times, but she was trying to adapt to the new things being thrown at her. Fin is just incredibly swoonworthy! We get to meet some new, fabulous characters in this story but I did miss Fin's sister Tatchi a lot. I really enjoyed her during book 1 and hope to see more of her in the next installment.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is that a lot of questions are explained in regards to the life of a mer. Along with that, there is so much action, drama, on top of twists and turns on every page. Fin has to go away for a while and this leads to a few secrets being kept. I did wish the characters could have been more honest with each other.

The main theme of this book was love and hope. I really felt that Fin and Ash had that desire to be together and their hope helped to get them through. It was easy to connect with them due to this and I liked seeing the book from both points of view.

I highly recommend this series if you are a fan of mermaid/merman books. This series provides a nice spin on the traditional story.
