I was lucky enough to read INBETWEEN early and it is outstanding! I can't wait to see where the story goes next! Tara is here today for a tour stop and to share with us a guest post on writing from a male POV. Check out the information below on how you can win an ebook and other fabulous prizes!!
How to prepare to write from a male’s POV
Something not everyone may know about INBETWEEN is that it is a dual POV. Half of the book is from Emma’s POV, and the other half in from Finn’s POV. So, with this comes the question: How do you prepare to write from a male POV when you’re a thirty year old chick?
Writing something from the male POV wasn’t something I ever really set out to do. When the idea for INBETWEEN came to me, I had planned to write the entire book from Emma’s POV. But there was a problem. I got one chapter in, and Finn started talking. At times he spoke louder than Emma did. I can’t say I really did anything in particular to prepare to write for Finn. I did read some YA books with a male and dual POV’s to get a feel for it. Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver series has to be one of my favorites. I will forever have a crush on Sam. When I finally sat down to write this story, Finn demanded to be heard. It didn’t take long to realize that this story was as much his as it was Emma’s.
I think the most challenging part about it all was the dual POV. Keeping Emma and Finn’s separate stories straight, while maintaining a good pace was difficult. Also keeping their voices distinct and separate.
Now, as far as getting an eighteen-year-old guy’s voice right? That took work. I’m not a teen anymore. And I’m a girl. So, there were definitely times my editor had to pull me aside and say You know, I really don’t think he’d say that.
Overall, this was a really surprising experience for me. The voice of Finn came easier to me than even Emma’s did at times. I didn’t even have to grill my friend’s teenage son, draw on a funny mustache, or walk around in my husband’s jeans. Sometimes when you have a character in your head, it’s not even you writing the story. You just sit back and let them do their thing. And then deal with editing hell later. ;)

Inbetween by Tara Fuller
Publisher: Entangled Publishing (August 28th, 2012)
Reading Level: Young Adult
Paperback: 400 pages
Series: Kissed By Death, #1
Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.
It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

Hi Heather! Thanks for the qestion. I have wanted to be a writer my whole life. I started writing poetry in the third grade. But when I was in High School, I realized I wanted to do this as a job. :)

ReplyDeleteThank u for this amazing giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI read another book this summer and loved it so I'm excited for Inbetween! Thanks for doing the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI too always wondered how authors pull off the male POV, so it's great to read about it from one author. I think it's a true gift.
ReplyDeleteI love that she took on the challenge of writing in a male voice - for that reason alone, I want to read this one. Quite often, I can tell when an author is stretching to write in the voice of the opposite gender (quite often, with older male authors, I can tell by their somewhat lecherous sex scenes).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!
