Guest Post & Giveaway: The Ylem by Tatiana Vila

Titiana Vila is the author of The Ylem and she is here today to talk about "Fantasy Courting Reality". She's also been kind enough to offer 3 ebooks of The Ylem for giveaway.

FANTASY COURTING REALITY

Have you ever wondered why is that fantasy plays a big role in our lives? I was wondering that the other day. It was my sister's night off and we wanted to watch a movie in Netflix. She asked me what genre I was in the mood to watch and my answer popped up in my head right away: fantasy. That answer not only came that night, it comes up every single time someone asks me the same thing. Fantasy. Fantasy. It's like a carnivorous plant trapping every single foreign cloud of ideas. So, I asked myself "isn't there something else you like to watch besides hobbits and fairies and evil wizards?" To my relief, there was a big survivor: romance. Yes, if it isn't obvious, I love chick-flicks, and I think they are way underestimated. There are really good ones out there thanks to wonderful writers like Nicholas Sparks. Even guys don't flinch at the thought of watching his movies. Astonishing if you ask me.

Everyone knows love is a crucial ingredient in every story, the pinch of salt to a bland concoction, and for people like me who never tire of having butterflies in their stomachs, love is everything. I can't remember any of my friends not having dreamed of a brooding knight, or a sexy Spider-man, coming to save them from their soaring tower.  At one point or another, we, Venus descendants, have dreamed of being rescued by a dazzling man, rescued from that tower that confines our spirit, that tower that embodies the monotony in life. We secretly wish for an "out-of-the-box" story, not one that limits us to kitchen duties or paperwork. Deep inside ourselves, we know there's more to life than that. And fantasy is a key to realize that.

But more than a key, it's an escapade. A journey that takes us far away from our linear, mundane dimension.  It's a big gulp of air. That's why I love to write about things that aren't tangible. It offers us a chance to experience something beyond our reality, to fuel our dreams with excitement. Fantasy, like love, expands our spirit. And we need that.

We also need an anchor. Have you heard of the yin yang? Complementary opposites? How there's always something good in the bad and something bad in the good?  It's an ancient Chinese understanding of how things work in life. For me, it all comes down to this. If we don't embrace our problems, our distresses, or our "dysfunctional" husband or boyfriend, the landing to reality will be a killing one, face down with bits of our brains splattered everywhere. Reality is our anchor. We need it as we need fantasy. They feed off each other. A good story always keeps this balance, and I try to stick to this formula as close as I can in my books. Just ask Kalista, my wonderful leading character in The Ylem Trilogy. She knows this Yin Yang philosophy by heart. Perfect things aren't as fun as imperfect things. As we secretly wish for white knights, we secretly ask for dark knights. As we secretly wish for fantasy, we secretly wish for reality, too. Imperfection drives our lives and that's what makes it so good, don't you think?

Interview & Giveaway: The Survivors by Amanda Havard

Today Amanda Havard is here to talk about her book The Survivors, which was just released yesterday!

She's also been kind enough to offer up a copy for one lucky reader.

1. What originally gave you the idea for The Survivors Series and can you tell us a little about it?

THE SURVIVORS is based on the idea that, in the midst of the Salem witch trials, all the way back in 1692, a group of children and teens were accused as witches and, in lieu of being killed, they were exiled and left for dead. But through impossibly treacherous conditions, 14 of the exiled survived. They were just a few Puritan kids, scared out of their minds, and entirely unaware of their abilities.
Fast forward 319 years to today and those same 14 survivors and their descendants are hidden on a Montana mountainside where they have built a walled village, raised families, and stayed secluded until now. Unsure of how or why they were able to live, they simply called themselves Survivors. The name stuck.
The story follows Sadie, who is the only one among the Survivors who has ever left the family’s city. Sadie is a bit of a mess. While she is intelligent, refined, fashionable, and generally pretty awesome for being able to make it in the human world, she has a fairly tumultuous undercurrent in her life. For one, she is, as far as she knows, the only one of her kind outside her estranged family. For another, she realizes that living among humans isn’t the same as being a human. And so, somehow, simultaneously she is seeking companionship and a way to become mortal, new beginnings and a somewhat terrifying end.
In book one of the series, you get a real taste for all the major players and circumstances that exist in Sadie’s life. She meets other supernatural creatures. She gets close to a human in ways that concern her. She has to deal with the family she thought she’d left behind forever. She falls in love.
And she also finds out that Fate has chosen for her to live out a life far more controversial, conflicted, and crazy than she anticipated. The jacket copy ends with the line, “And it is only the beginning,” and we’re not kidding by that. What’s coming in this series is nuts, and I’m so excited to share it with you.

And as for how I got the idea: THE SURVIVORS came to me through a sequence of events. The long version of the story-behind-the-story can be found here on my website, but the short version is this: I wanted to write a story about creature you’ve never heard of because the idea of a Survivor seemed to good to pass up to me—the creature that could survive anything, whether it wanted to or not. The Survivors aren’t witches or shape-shifters or vampires (though she encounters all of those creatures). Instead, they don’t know what they are, and so you don’t either.
I also have an obsession with fitting fiction into the holes in history, and so the Salem witch trials felt like a great place to start. The history behind Salem is just insane, and sometimes the truth of it is way stranger than any fiction we’d create. I fused the two in this story (hopefully well).

2. Your book involves several paranormal creatures. If you had to pick, what type of paranormal creature would you like to be and why?

This is a tough one. Though it’s going to sound incredibly biased, I actually would say a Survivor. They have the strength and speed and immortality like [some kinds of] vampires, and they each have a cool individual power or two, but there’s no bloodlust and so a little less of the wanting-to-eat-your-human-friends part.
But I must admit: I have been accused of having some vampire-like qualities before. I’m very pale (and cool with that!), I rarely sleep, sometimes forget to eat, and generally live a life that’s somewhat mythological. I’m also seriously into sports cars and fashion like a certain famous vamp we all know, so there’s that.

3. Since we both live in Tennessee I have to ask; what kind of strange creatures do you think live in these big mountains?

This is a very great question. Ever since my life started revolving around researching obscure mythological creatures and odd supernatural lore from different cultures throughout history, I have asked myself this same question. I’ve decided the odds are 50/50 between seriously angry Antebellum ghosts and a Tennessee-style sasquatch. Maybe centaurs! I do see a lot of enormous deer (who could totally be confused as centaurs in the dark, duh) when I drive the Natchez Trace at night.
(What do you think are in our beloved, creepy mountains??)

4. Can you introduce us to a few of your main characters and share a little about them?

Of course, there is Sadie who tells us her story. There’s Corrina, her human best friend (who has no knowledge of her supernatural wonder), who is largely responsible for the fact that most of what Sadie wears came off of a runway from a New York Fashion Week show. In chapter one, you meet the beautiful, clean-cut, and alarmingly perfect Cole Hardwick—a human love interest that Corrina has selected for Sadie.
But it’s not long before Sadie starts meeting other supernaturals. First, there is the mysterious, possibly violent Mark Winter—the classic example of someone tough on the outside and immensely soft on the inside. Then there is Everett, Mark’s older brother, who leaves Sadie speechless, stunned, and generally never the same after their first meeting. Where Cole is more sweet Southern charm, Everett is more intense, smooth, yet enigmatic in a way that makes him hard not to simultaneously connect to and be wary of. More playfully, you get to know Ginny, the beloved, outlandish Winter sister who is the blonde in the Louboutins stepping out of a candy-apple red Lotus.
It’s worth mentioning that Sadie, Corrina, and Ginny are all on Twitter right now. You can follow them @SadiesTravels  @Corrinarina and @BlondeLouboutin. And as the timeline of the story progresses, there will be more to come!

5. What else do you have planned for this series?

This is hard to say without giving anything away, but let’s just say that the remaining four books in the series are totally amped up versions of this one. The stakes for all the players are higher. The feelings—good and bad— get more intense. Loyalties are questioned, boundaries are pushed, and every one of our main characters finds her or himself in serious danger from all kinds of different threats. Sadie and the others delve deeply into the Survivors’ often confusing past, seeking answers to questions that were never supposed to be asked. Plus, the story is further rooted in history and into world mythology (much of which is closer to home than you expect). And Sadie? Well, Sadie has a lot of learning to do (often the hard way) before she can finally land with her feet on the ground, but isn’t that the case for us all?
Before the final page of the final book is closed, we’ll see love and loss, war and little peace, remorse and regret, destruction and creation, and quintessential questions asked about good and evil, about each of us as individuals and as a part of something bigger. In THE SURVIVORS, side-by-side with Sadie, you’ll learn what it means to survive.

Review: The Girl Who Was On Fire by Various Authors

The Girl Who Was On Fire by Various Authors
Edited by Leah Wilson
Publisher: Smart Pop (April 5th, 2011)
Reading Level: Young Adult
Source: Publisher
Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Praised by writers from Stephen King to Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins’ New York Times bestselling Hunger Games trilogy is dark, captivating, and deeply thought-provoking. Part straight-up survivalist adventure, part rich allegory, and part political thriller, the series has become a new YA favorite.
The Girl Who Was On Fire offers even more to think about for teen readers already engrossed by the Hunger Games. From the trilogy's darker themes of violence and social control to reality television, fashion, and weaponry, the collection's exploration of the Hunger Games by other YA writers reveals exactly how rich, and how perilous, protagonist Katniss’ world really is.
The Girl Who Was On Fire covers all three books in the Hunger Games trilogy.

Review: Pretty much everyone has heard of The Hunger Games, and most have their own opinions about the series. What we rarely get to see, is an author share their thoughts about a book or series. The Girl Who Was On Fire gives us that chance. Each author focuses on a certain topic, or issue, in the book and they explain their thoughts on the trilogy.

I had several sections of this book that stood out as favorites. Each author brought humor and fascinating theories to support their outlook. Sarah Rees Brennan had some very funny comments regarding the love and sexy-times in the series. She admits she's "a filthy-minded creature from the gutter". It's so nice to see authors open up and show that they are just like us! *wink*

Cara Lockwood focused on the science behind some of the creatures we see in The Hunger Games; tracker jackers, and mutts. I was shocked to read about some of the scientific experiments that have been conducted by researchers, in real life. Scary stuff! It proved that maybe tracker jackers may not be far from our future.

For me, I really loved how each section brought back memories from reading the book. It gave me a lot to think about and pointed out things I had missed along the way. As readers, we often focus on different things we notice in the book but The Girl Who Was On Fire lets us have time to slow down and concentrate on each individual issue.

Other stories discuss the fashion, politics, media, and of course, the relationships we all come to enjoy during the trilogy. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games series, and would like to see how authors feel about the story, you gotta read this book. Each story is interesting in its own way and helps the reader look back at these books that have been embraced so much by teens and adults.

Interview & Giveaway: Falling Under by Gwen Hayes

I'm very happy to have Gwen Hayes on the blog today. She has the new, fabulous book, Falling Under, that was just released and one lucky reader will win a copy.

1. I have to say that Falling Under has a breathtaking cover. What did you think when you first saw it?

I cried. It’s what every author dreams of when they think of their ideal debut cover. I can’t take any credit for it though. I just get to bask in its awesomeness.

2. What does your writing space look like?

3. What are your favorite snacks while writing?

Cheetos and Diet Rockstar. Except Cheetos make my fingers cheesy. Also, I like suckers.

4. Can you tell us a little about Theia?

Theia has been and continues to be a very difficult character to write. She portrays herself one way..and even talks herself into believing it…but she pretty much is the exact opposite.  The nice part about it is I think that makes her more real. We all tend to act a certain way in public, but think something else….Theia just convinces herself that is how she really feels. Sometimes.

She’s been raised by her dad to be the opposite of her free-spirited mom—but she carries that impulsive gene. She also feels like an outsider a lot, except with her friends. I love her friends so much.

5. What are you currently working on now, and can you give us a little hint as to what to expect from the rest of this series?

I turned in the sequel and am waiting for edits. (Do you hear the theme from Jaws, or is that just me?) After that, I have some characters in my head who want to talk about their experiences living in Serendipity Falls.

As far as what happens in book 2…I can’t really say. Except that Under isn’t over Theia by a long shot.

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog. I hope everyone enjoys Falling Under.  And Cheetos. (Do you think they’ll send me a free case if I promo them enough?)

Falling Under by Gwen Hayes
Publisher: New American Library (March 1st, 2011)
Reading Level: Young Adult
Paperback: 324 pages
Series: Falling Under, #1
Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

Interview & Giveaway: Intrinsical author Lani Woodland

I'm very happy to have Lani Woodland on the blog today! She is the author of The Yara Silva trilogy, and she has been kind enough to answer a few questions today and offer up a copy of her book Intrinsical.

1. What type of books did you like to read when you were younger?

When I was in elementary school I read a lot of different types of books. I read Sweet Valley Twins and The Babysitter Club. I also loved scary MG books, Wait Till Helen Comes being one of my favorites.

2. What are some of your favorite books and authors now?

I really love the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I also love Arabella, The Corinithian and These Old Shades  by Georgette Heyer , if you want to go way back to Regency Romance. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. How to take the Ex out of Ex-Boyfriend by Janette Rallison. I laughed so hard I snorted when I read that book. I also loved Graceling by Kristin Cashore .

3. Can you tell us a little about the Yara Silva Trilogy, and Yara herself?

The best way to describe Intrinsical is to give you the blurb.
Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly.

The series is about Yara coming to terms with who she really is and what she is capable of.

4. Can you share with us a little about book 2 in the series, Indelible?

Indelible follows Yara and her friends through their senior year. Yara is now a full-fledged Waker and she is starting to understand just how much that will influence her life.

5. Would you ever want a power like Yara's?

No. If there are things that go bump in the night I’d rather not be able to see them. :)

6. What are 10 little-know facts about you?

1)    My favorite Jamba Juice flavor is Mango-a-go-go
2)    My tongue is long enough for me to touch the tip of my nose.
3)    When I was a child I desperately wanted to have Mary Poppins’ white dress (the one she wears when they go into the chalk drawing). I hope one day to dress up in it for Halloween.
4)    I performed gymnastics at the 1986 World’s Fair.
5)    I once booked a non-refundable trip to NYC while playing around on Priceline (and not really meaning to have booked it until months later). It took me days to gather the courage to tell my husband.
6)    I was tweedle-dee to my best friend’s tweedle-dum in our school’s homecoming parade.
7)    I knocked on Steve Young’s door to get an autographed football as a thank you gift for my dad.
8)    I stood in line at Disneyland all day so I could meet Johnny Depp.
9)    I love old carousels.
10) I read so much I’m on the first name basis with both my county and city librarians, and the clerk at my local B&N.

Kiddie Korner: Say Hello to Zorro!

Say Hello to Zorro! by Carter Goodrich
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Date: March 22nd, 2011
Hardcover: 48 pages
Ages: 4-8
Mister Bud is a dog of routine. He has wake up time, nap time, rest time, dinner time, etc. And everyone knows to follow his schedule.
Then disaster strikes. A stranger comes home at "make a fuss time" and throws everything off! Zorro is little bit bossy and Mister Bud wants nothing to do with him. But when the dogs discover they like the same things (like chasing the cat and napping), everything becomes more fun. As long as everyone follows the schedule.

Purchasing Information:

My Thoughts:

This is a really cute book. It's about a dog, Mister Bud, who has his own strict schedule until it was interrupted by the new dog in the house, Zorro. The book shows how they first didn't get along but eventually realized they do many of the same things. They start enjoying those activities together and end up as friends. I think this book would be great for children getting a new sibling. The dogs reminded me of how children can be picky about their schedule and activities and having a new child in the house can mess that up.

The illustrations are simple and adorable. Even the inside covers have illustrations of the puppies. Plus, this book shows children that sometimes animals, and people, are not happy. They may be angry or stubborn when they are forced into change. But, they can learn acceptance if they try to get along.

Bloggers: Help Needed

Hello everyone. As I mentioned last week, my blogoversary/birthday celebration is coming soon. It will start April 25th and I'll have a giveaway a day for at least 2 weeks. But, I wanted to come up with something fun to do as a post for each day.

Here is my plan. I'd love to celebrate blogs and bloggers by having some on here to answer questions. I will be sending participating bloggers 5 questions. I'll take those answers and post one question/answer a day.

Then, I hope to get authors to participate as well. I plan to email some of my favorite authors and give them 5 questions to see what they think about bloggers and our little community. :) Sound fun?

If you would like to participate fill out this form below.
I will be linking your blog at the end of your answer so you do need to have a blog, but it doesn't matter how long you have been blogging. You just need to have an active blog. I'm not sure how many I will get to use. If I get too many to fit into a post, I will pick a certain random number and go from there, but I will try to get as many as possible in the post.

Thank you in advance to those who wish to participate. I hope it will be something fun to check out each day!
