Picking my favorite 5 YA books of all time is not easy. I have around 50 books that I would call my "favorites". But I tried to think of it this way. What 5 would I recommend to someone? It's obvious that Twilight would be a favorite but I won't add that one because most people have at least heard of Twilight. (Unless they are living under a rock!).
These are in no particular order!
Going Too Far by Jennifer EcholsPublisher: Simon & Schuster (March 17, 2009)
Paperback: 256 pages
HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO?
All Meg has ever wanted is to get away. Away from high school. Away from her backwater town. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives. But one crazy evening involving a dare and forbidden railroad tracks, she goes way too far...and almost doesn't make it back.
John made a choice to stay. To enforce the rules. To serve and protect. He has nothing but contempt for what he sees as childish rebellion, and he wants to teach Meg a lesson she won't soon forget. But Meg pushes him to the limit by questioning everything he learned at the police academy. And when he pushes back, demanding to know why she won't be tied down, they will drive each other to the edge -- and over....
This is the only book I have ever, immediately, read twice....in 2 days! I read it in 1 night and even though I was exhausted, I wanted to read it again. It was such an original story and the characters were amazing. This book was on my mind for quite a while even after I was finished reading it the 2nd time. If anyone is looking for a quick read and an amazing love story, pick this one up!!
Her next book, Forget You, is coming out July 20th, and needless to say, I can't wait!!
Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler
Publisher: Simon Pulse (December 16, 2008)
Paperback: 704 pages
A love beyond life...a danger beyond doubt.
When her boyfriend, Tristan, died, Ivy thought she'd lost everything, even her faith in angels. But now she's discovered that he's her guardian angel -- his presence so strong that she can feel the touch of his hand, the beat of his heart. Ivy needs Tristan now more than ever because he knows she's in terrible danger. Only Ivy's guardian angel can save her now that his killer is after her.
But if Tristan rescues Ivy, his mission on earth will be finished, and he must leave her behind forever. Will saving Ivy mean losing her just when he's finally reached her again?
I can't count how many times I cried while reading this book. It was so easy to fall into the story and feel what Ivy and Tristan were feeling. The mystery was great and kept me interested till the end. Warning: Get tissues handy when you read this one!
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic Press (August 1, 2009)
Hardback: 400 pages
Every summer Sam spends a few precious months being human, until the cold causes him to shift to a wolf once again. Discover what happens when he meets Grace in this chilling romance.
This story is told from alternating points of view- told through Sam and Grace. This was my first real "wolf story" and it didn't disappoint. The trust and love of the characters could be seen from each prospective. If you love wolves (and c'mon, who doesn't) pick up this book!
Book 2, Linger, comes out July 20th.
Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready
Publisher: Simon Pulse (May 4th, 2010)
Reading Level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 320 pages
Love ties them together. Death can't tear them apart.
Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.
Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone.
Well, sort of.
Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.
It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding--and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.
As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart...and clues to the secret of the Shift.
I wrote this review already but I really can't say enough good things about this story. It is so original! It was easy to believe that these characters lived in a world where seeing ghosts was a common occurrence. Thankfully, this story will be continuing in book 2, Shift, May 2011! Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razorbill (August 16, 2007)
Paperback: 336 pages
St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school—it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's—the very place where they're most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
This is the first book of my favorite series! Once you start reading about Rose, Lissa, and especially Dimitri (Hot!) you have no choice but to keep up with the series! Some stories seem to run out of steam after a while, but this one does not! It still keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you are looking for a book series that is still great, pick up this one!
So those are my favorites! What are yours?
